Guterres visits Egypt for regional consultations

· BehindLines newsroom

António Guterres announced his arrival in Cairo on 24 October, EgyptToday reports in an article published that day at 10:10 GMT. The outlet cites a message from the United Nations secretary-general calling for the spread of wars to be contained, civilians to be protected and room for diplomacy to be preserved. The arrival comes at the beginning of a visit whose programme runs until 26 October, according to Daily News Egypt.

The previous day, the United Nations information service in Geneva had presented the trip as part of Guterres's diplomatic consultations. Its stated aim is to help ease tensions involving Iran and the United States and support a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. The UN also highlighted Egypt's engagement with regional and international partners in these efforts.

According to the programme reported by Daily News Egypt, meetings are planned with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Badr Abdelatty, Egypt's foreign minister, and Nabil Fahmy, the Arab League secretary-general. The situations in Gaza and Sudan are among the issues announced for discussion. This list describes the intended agenda; it does not establish that every meeting has already taken place.

The visit coincides with United Nations Day on 24 October, which commemorates the entry into force of the Charter in 1945. The UN had also announced an encounter with students and diplomats at Cairo University. Daily News Egypt mentions a meeting with the United Nations team in the country and an expected return to New York on 27 October.

The EgyptToday report therefore provides a dated account of the arrival, while the earlier announcements explain the aims of the stay. Any commitments and outcomes will need to be assessed using accounts of the meetings. These sources do not yet document a ceasefire agreement or a joint decision resulting from the visit.
