Tom Skerritt’s authority figures across film and television

· BehindLines newsroom

Tom Skerritt’s death at the age of 93 was announced on 22 October. In a statement shared with People, his family said he died on 21 October. His career reached several generations of viewers, spanning the films of the 1970s and television series.

Familiar characters in different worlds

In Alien, released in 1979 and directed by Ridley Scott, Skerritt plays Dallas, captain of the spaceship Nostromo. Top Gun gave him another position of command in 1986: Viper, the instructor of the character played by Tom Cruise.

Those two roles made his face familiar, but they do not sum up his career. He also appears in Robert Altman’s 1970 comedy MAS*H. In A River Runs Through It, directed by Robert Redford in 1992, he plays the family’s father, the Reverend Maclean. LATF also recalls his appearances in The Turning Point, Steel Magnolias and Contact.

Looking at these films together reveals a thread: characters who are in charge or who are fathers, within stories as different as science fiction, aviation and family drama. That perspective places the actor beyond any single franchise.

Television matters as much as the films

Picket Fences gave Skerritt another lasting role, Sheriff Jimmy Brock. He won the Emmy for lead actor in a drama series in 1993 for that performance. The award is a reminder that he built his career across both screens, rather than only in his best-known films.

The NPR portrait carried by KNKX also highlights his support for independent cinema and theatre in the northwestern United States, where he lived. It recalls his part in creating the Red Badge Project, which offers veterans opportunities to develop narratives and share their experiences.

Those activities extend his interest in stories beyond the characters he played. From a science-fiction captain to a small-town sheriff, his career connects very different forms of storytelling. It also includes passing that interest on through theatre, independent cinema and workshops for veterans.
