NBA: two matchups to follow on October 21
· BehindLines newsroom
The NBA's US national schedule for October 21 features Minnesota visiting Miami, followed by Golden State at the Lakers. That second evening of the 2026–27 regular season is the focus of this preview. The fixtures will offer an early look at teams beginning a long campaign, although a schedule cannot establish their strength. Dates refer to the US programme: viewers in other time zones may follow the games on the following day.
ESPN confirms the programme in its October 19 release: Minnesota–Miami is scheduled for 7:30pm, followed by Golden State–Lakers at 10pm, US Eastern time. Both start times refer to games dated October 21 in the United States.
The announced opening-week programme
For October 20, the official schedule listed Boston visiting Detroit, Philadelphia playing at New York and Oklahoma City travelling to San Antonio. A Knicks championship celebration was scheduled before the visit of the 76ers. Start times for those opening games were listed as 3pm, 7pm and 9:30pm in the US Eastern time zone. Those times should not be confused with local hours in every country following the games.
An October 8 AP report carried by KSL confirms Philadelphia's reshaped group: LeBron James and Jaylen Brown played alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey in preseason under Nick Nurse. That first combination came before the regular-season opener. How the players share possession and responsibilities is among the issues to watch as they move into competitive games.
Opening night cannot define the entire season
San Antonio against Oklahoma City was also on the October 20 schedule, matching the teams from the previous season's Western Conference finals. This reference to the programme is not a game report: no result from that evening is established here.
The league plans to conclude its regular season on April 11, 2027. For now, the opening fixtures offer observations about combinations and roles rather than a lasting verdict on the teams.
