Europa League: ten-man Ferencváros win at San Siro and sink Milan
· BehindLines newsroom
AC Milan stayed on three points after four matchdays of the Europa League league phase: on Thursday 5 November at San Siro they lost 2-0 to Ferencváros, who played the end of the match with ten men. Lenny Joseph scored both goals, in the 52nd and 66th minutes, according to the Milan club's official site and FootItalia.
A match that turned after the break
It was still 0-0 at half-time, FootItalia notes. Joseph opened the scoring in the 52nd minute and doubled the lead in the 66th. FootItalia credits Kristoffer Zachariassen with the assist on both goals; Milan's report explicitly credits him only with the second. UEFA describes the first as coming early in the second half and the second on the break.
A red card that changed nothing
Bamidele Yusuf of Ferencváros was sent off in the 77th minute for an elbow on Gila away from the ball, according to Milan's match report. FootItalia says the red card was given after a VAR review. Even with the numerical advantage, the Rossoneri could not get back into the game. According to FootItalia, they had around 70% of the possession and took 15 shots, only 2 of them on target, against 12 shots for Ferencváros, 8 of them on target.
What it means for the table
Milan remain on three points after four rounds. Ferencváros, for their part, are unbeaten with four wins from four, according to UEFA. On the same night, Bournemouth won 3-1 at Sparta Prague in their first European campaign and Celtic beat Beşiktaş 3-2.
On the Milan side, goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani replaced the suspended Maignan for his first start, the club says. Milan now travel to Olympiacos in Europe, then to Genoa in Serie A, the last game before the international break.
