MozFest puts community tools on Barcelona's agenda
· BehindLines newsroom
Barcelona's Mozilla Festival is scheduled for 28–30 October 2026 at Recinte Fabra i Coats. The city's listing and the Open Source Initiative's calendar agree on the dates. Ahead of the planned opening, the question extends beyond a new browser release: how can communities choose and build their own digital tools?
A programme shaped by its participants
The Mozilla Foundation describes a programme developed through community proposals, with discussions, workshops and installations among the announced formats. This makes the gathering useful to read as a space for collective work, rather than simply a sequence of product demonstrations.
Its theme, Wilding, borrows from ecological regeneration to frame technology differently. The organisers emphasise interoperability and a diversity of initiatives. That is their stated direction; the theme alone does not demonstrate that a particular tool will be open, sustainable or suitable for everyone.
The track descriptions cover local knowledge, infrastructure and artistic practice, among other subjects. Questions about platform control and environmental impact sit alongside developers' concerns. A discussion can therefore involve both a technical decision and the people entitled to make it.
Questions to take into a session
Readers can assess a proposal with some practical questions: can users move their data elsewhere, understand a service's rules and keep using it if its supplier changes direction? These are ways to examine an idea, rather than measurements already made at the festival.
The FAQ points to the detailed schedule and says badge categories provide the same level of access. Registration conditions should still be checked with the organiser. MozFest forms part of Barcelona's Open Tech Week; the wider week and the festival do not amount to a single programme. The announcements offer a guide to what to follow, while the discussions and outcomes of the coming days remain to be established.
