A receipt that never printed at the pump leads to a $2 million Powerball win
· BehindLines newsroom
A faulty gas pump printer changed the life of a North Carolina student: Bram Dunehew of Concord won $2 million in the Powerball after buying a ticket he says he would never have bought without that missing receipt, according to UPI, TV station WSOC and the state lottery.
A ticket bought for lack of a receipt
According to WSOC, Bram Dunehew was filling his tank on Friday when the pump did not print his receipt. He went into the store, Sam's Mart on N.C. 49 in Harrisburg, to ask for one, and while there bought a $3 ticket for Saturday's drawing, the Halloween one. "It's crazy because I never would have even bought that ticket if the receipt printed outside," he said, according to UPI and the lottery.
Five matching numbers and the Power Play option
His ticket matched all five white balls, worth $1 million. The Power Play option doubled the sum to $2 million in total, UPI and the lottery say. After federal and state withholdings, he took home $1,440,201, according to WSOC and the North Carolina lottery. He came to claim his prize on Monday at lottery headquarters.
The winner's plans
He also called the win "absolutely preposterous", according to WSOC and the lottery.
Dunehew, who studies civil engineering, says he "fell over" when he saw the result, according to the lottery, and thinks Halloween is now his favourite holiday, WSOC reports. He plans to buy his father a Cadillac, UPI and WSOC say.
The sources we read do not give his age or the exact time of the purchase. Nor do they say what fault stopped the receipt from printing: UPI simply refers to a pump malfunction.
