Philippe Jaenada has won the 2026 Goncourt prize for L’Inconnue du quai de Javel, published by Flammarion. The jury announced its choice on 3 November at the Drouant restaurant in Paris, Euronews reports. The decision concludes the Académie Goncourt’s autumn selection process.
Four novels had remained in contention since 27 October. Alongside Philippe Jaenada’s book, the final shortlist included La Solitude des professeurs est infinie by Yannick Haenel, Choses que je croyais perdues by Clémentine Mélois, and De l’autre côté du lac by Sylvain Prudhomme. The books by Yannick Haenel and Clémentine Mélois are published by Gallimard, and Sylvain Prudhomme’s by Éditions de Minuit. All the publishers of the four finalists, Flammarion included, belong to the Madrigall group, Euronews notes.
The Académie Goncourt sets precise conditions for eligibility: writing in French and being published by a French-language publisher with a distribution network serving bookshops. Translations and self-published works are excluded. The novel must be on bookshop shelves from the first week of September. Three successive selections then lead to the final choice in November.
Voting takes place orally. An absolute majority is required during the first ten rounds, while a relative majority is sufficient from the eleventh to the thirteenth. In the fourteenth round, the president’s vote counts double in the event of a tie. The award presented to the winner is a symbolic cheque for 10 euros, the Académie Goncourt recalls in its presentation of the prize.
The literary calendar continues after this announcement. The Goncourt des lycéens, organised by Fnac and France’s Ministry of National Education with the support of the Académie Goncourt, follows its own programme of reading and deliberation. Its winner is due to be announced on 26 November in Rennes. The academy members’ choice on 3 November and that of the young readers thus represent two separate occasions for the autumn’s new novels.
