Chelsea–Roma: what is at stake before 28 October
· BehindLines newsroom
Chelsea are scheduled to host Roma on Wednesday 28 October 2026 in the third round of Women's Champions League league-phase matches. On the eve of the fixture, Chelsea's announcement gives a 5.45pm UK kick-off at Plough Lane. Roma confirms the date and the trip to London, while UEFA's list shows 18:45 CET. Those are two time-zone labels for the same start.
One match, one shared table
The importance of the fixture is easier to understand through the competition's structure. Under Article 17, all eighteen clubs appear in a single table. Each plays six different opponents once, with three fixtures at home and three away. Chelsea and Roma are therefore not meeting in a conventional group that automatically gives them a return match against each other.
A win brings three points, a draw one and a defeat none. The rules then create three different outcomes: the leading four clubs advance straight to the quarter-finals; those placed fifth through twelfth enter the knockout play-offs; the bottom six leave the competition. The London result will contribute to a table shared with teams playing elsewhere.
A useful checkpoint, rather than a verdict
The season guide places matchday three on 28 and 29 October. Provided the schedule holds, Wednesday's participants will have completed half of their six league fixtures when this game ends. That makes it a useful point for assessing their progress, but does not by itself establish who will qualify.
Reading the table afterwards will require more than checking a team's position. The number of completed matches matters too: clubs playing on different evenings may temporarily have unequal opportunities to collect points. A live ranking during the round is a snapshot rather than a finished comparison.
The published schedule establishes when to follow the game. It does not yet establish the starting line-ups, the balance of play or a final score. Team selections should be checked closer to kick-off and the result after the match has finished. No prediction or sporting outcome follows from the calendar alone.
